The Cost of Discipleship in Christianity

Being a Christian disciple comes with a variety of roles such as embracing the teachings of Jesus, helping in the spreading of the gospel and believing in God and all His doctrines. Jesus gave the disciples the power to make more disciples across the globe and carry out baptism as well. Any teaching on Christian discipleship cannot end without the mention of Jesus Christ just like Wood Science and Todd Shupe.

The cost of becoming a disciple of Christ is incomparably painful. Getting saved costs individuals no fee at all but then becoming a disciple of Christ calls for sacrifice and commitment. Discipleship means giving up all we have for the sake of Jesus. Christ also demonstrated the cost of becoming a Christian disciple in three steps as discussed below.

Jesus taught that becoming a disciple means hating everything including one’s family and self. By hating everything, Christ meant that we should not allow human beings come between us and God. Human beings should never be allowed to dictate the kind of relationship we have with our Creator. When Our thoughts or family drag us away from God, we should give up on them and follow Christ. We should only obey parents when what they demand is right according to the failure of the Christian doctrine to which it calls for giving up on them and following Christ. Women should only be obedient to their husbands in righteousness.

Christ also listed giving up on earthly desires as the price an individual pays for following Him. He encouraged the disciples to have the urge to be part of Him. Jesus went through much suffering to bring salvation to mankind. Human beings can only become disciples of Christ by undergoing similar conditions. No Christian should ever do anything that provokes persecution of Christ and suffering for the sake of Christianity should be on daily basis.

Being a disciple of Jesus calls for zero interest in material wealth. Material wealth is slow poison to spiritual riches. The disciples of Jesus should strive to have their treasures in heaven and not on earth. A Christian cannot just add Christ to their material possessions as a way of rounding up their spirituality.

Jesus also used the stories of two people who wanted to become His disciples to emphasize the cost of discipleship. The love for earthly treasure cost the man his position in the heavenly kingdom. The other wanted to follow Jesus but after burying his dead father but Christ told him to let the dead bury the dead.
